Douglas S. Ritter

Douglas S. Ritter is an award-winning journalist and authority in the areas of survival and survival equipment.

Mr. Ritter has written over 250 articles on survival related subjects. He has been invited to give presentations on survival and survival equipment at aviation and maritime events, search and rescue conferences and at other venues around the world. He has appeared on TV and radio shows and been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Ritter has served as a contributing editor to The Aviation Consumer and Aviation Safety for over a decade and is also Safety and Survival Editor for Practical Sailor and Powerboat Reports. These publications are entirely subscriber supported and accept no advertising. He served as the News Editor of AVweb for nearly two years (1998-1999) and won the National Air Transportation Association's 1999 "Aviation Journalism Award" for excellence in aviation journalism. He has edited the EAA AirVenture Today newspaper for the past two years. He won the 2000 Boating Writers International Annual Writing Contest in the category of Safety, Seamanship and Rescue for his five-part series of articles, "Life Rafts: The Good, Bad and The Ugly."

Mr. Ritter has also been a contributor to CODE ONE, AOPA Pilot, IFR, Flight Training, Southern Boating and others. He has been a contributor to two books including. The Kids' How to Do (Almost) Everything Guide. Mr. Ritter was an officer and pilot in the Civil Air Patrol for five years.

Mr. Ritter volunteers as a full working member of the SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc. S-9 Cabin Safety Provisions Committee and the S-9A Evacuation and Ditching Systems Subcommittee. As a member, he participates in the development of standards for related safety and survival systems on transport category aircraft. These SAE Aerospace Documents form the basis for many new, revised and updated standards and regulations issued by the FAA.

Erik P. Bernstein
Secretary

Mr. Bernstein is the President of Starwood Consulting, LLC, specializing in strategic business planning and financial modeling.  He holds a Master of Hospital Administration degree from the University of Minnesota (1988) and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Colorado (1997).

Mr. Bernstein is an instrument-rated pilot. He has past experience as a certified Emergency Medical Technician, working both in the field and as an EMS dispatcher. He helped develop an evaluation of the Denver Department of Health and Hospitals Disaster Plan and has participated in disaster exercises at Stapleton International Airport. 

Mr. Bernstein is presently serving as a Director of Boulder Jewish Elder Housing, as President of the Boulder Jewish Community Foundation, and as a Trustee and as the Chairman of the Finance Committee for a private philanthropic foundation, The Jay & Rose Phillips Family Foundation.

Steve White
Treasurer

Steve White is a certified instrument flight instructor with 2200 flying hours.  He has been a member of Civil Air Patrol (CAP) for 10 years, currently holding the rank of Lt. Colonel and has earned Command Pilot status.  He has also served as Standardization and Evaluation Officer and Mission Check Pilot.  He has flown 500 hours of Search and Rescue operations. Mr. White served as the Arizona Wing CAP Director of Operations for three years. During this period, Mr. White initiated and organized upgrade and replacement of AZWing's inadequate aircraft survival kits with modern, standardized survival kits that have served as a model that other wings and the national CAP Supply Depot have used for development of their own improved and upgraded aviation survival kits.

Mr. White also served on staff and as Director of the CAP Southwest Region Staff College, an advanced education program sponsored by the Air Force and conducted at the NCO Academy at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.

For ten years Mr. White flew as a mission pilot with Flights for Life.

Mr. White is a professional freelance photographer with 26 years experience in the retail photography equipment and professional photo lab business. He is currently manager of an independent photography store specializing in digital imaging and operates Arizona Digital Imaging Institute, providing courses in digital photography and related software.

David Pulver

David S. Pulver is founder and CEO of Pulver Technologies, Inc., specializing in Web development and building sophisticated end-to-end b2c and b2b e-commerce solutions for mid-tier retailers, along with expertise in integrating with back-end ERP systems.

Mr. Pulver's expertise includes: IBM Net.Commerce / IBM Websphere Commerce Suite, IBM DB2, IBM Net.Data, MS SQL, MS Access, Progress, Java, C, C++, PERL, Visual Basic, multiple EDI standards, and application development. Mr. Pulver's hardware and platform expertise includes Windows NT/2K, UNIX, AIX, and AS/400. Additionally, Mr. Pulver is a certified networking and systems specialist.

Mr. Pulver holds a BSE in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona.

Mr. Pulver was previously a founder and the CEO of Web Emporium, LLC. Since its inception, Mr. Pulver has provided Equipped To Survive's Internet Server and related services.

Barry Schiff

A journalist and author, Capt. Barry Schiff has written 12 award-winning books and more than 1,100 articles published in 90 aviation magazines, notably AOPA Pilotfor which he is a contributing editor. Many of his articles focus on safety and survival concepts, procedures, and techniques that he has developed and which have received international acclaim and adoption. For example, Capt. Schiff developed the concept of VFR routes that the FAA adopted to provide general aviation pilots with safe routes through high-density airspace.

Capt. Schiff has more than 26,000 hours logged in 270 types of aircraft (including the Lockheed U-2). He became a rated Airline Transport Pilot at age 21, and has earned every FAA category and class rating (except airship) and every possible instructor's rating. Capt. Schiff retired from Trans World Airlines in 1998 after a 34-year career during which he flew everything from the Lockheed Constellation to the Boeing 747, serving as a check captain on the Boeing 767. He holds five world speed records and has received numerous honors for his many contributions to aviation safety. These include a Congressional Commendation, the Louis Bleriot Air Medal (France), Switzerland's Gold Proficiency Medal, an honorary doctorate from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and AOPA's L. P. Sharples Perpetual Award.

In addition to his writing and work on upcoming books, Capt. Schiff currently provides consulting services and expert witness testimony for the airline and general aviation industries, primarily involving the investigation of aviation accidents.

Steven Callahan

Steven Callahan's interest in safety at sea and survival was further focused after surviving for 76 days alone in a life raft in 1982, chronicled in his award winning bestseller, Adrift, 76 Days Lost at Sea. A naval architect by training, he is president of S.P. Callahan & Associates, providing design, research and consulting services to the boat building and marine safety industries.

Mr. Callahan is a widely respected writer and editor with hundreds of articles to his credit for publications in the U.S. and abroad, and is currently serving as Editor at Large for Cruising World magazine. He also authored Capsized, the true story of four men who survived 119 days adrift in a capsized multi-hull sailboat. He has contributed to seven other books on seamanship, safety and survival, including serving as contributing editor and illustrator of Survivor by Michael Greenwald, the “bible” of sea survival. He is a regular lecturer on the subject of seamanship, safety and survival at maritime events around the world. On his own boats and as a delivery skipper he has amassed over 70,000 offshore miles including seven ocean crossings (four double-handed and one single-handed), and fifteen passages (three single-handed) between the U.S. and Bermuda.

Brent Blue, MD

Dr. Brent Blue is a Board Certified Family and Emergency Physician practicing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  He is on staff at St. John's Hospital, Jackson, Wyoming, where he has previously served as Chief of Medicine and ER Committee Chairman, among a number of such positions. He is also on staff at Regional Medical Center of San Jose and San Jose Medical Center, San Jose, California, and NorthWest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights, Illinois.

He serves as a Reviewer for The Journal of Family Practice and Patient Care, has authored numerous articles in both medical and consumer publications and been a contributor to a number of medical and consumer books dealing with Emergency and Mountain Medicine. He has lectured extensively on Emergency Medicine, Aviation Medicine, Mountain Medicine, Hypothermia and Wilderness Survival and Rescue.

Dr. Blue holds an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) rating with 8,000 hours and also holds a seaplane rating. He is an FAA Senior Aviation Medical Examiner, a volunteer member of the EAA Aeromedical Advisory Council and a former Director of the Civil Aviation Medical Association. He serves as the Medical Editor of AVweb and as Medical Consultant for Belvoir Publications' aviation publications, including The Aviation Consumer, Aviation Safety and IFR.

Dr. Blue is President and Medical Director of DocTalk, LLC, a telephone based health information service staffed by Board Certified Physicians. This service provides health information to the consumer as well as on-demand consumer laboratory testing.

Dr. Blue founded Aeromedix.com in 1998 to provide health, safety, and survival products to the general aviation community.

R. Scott Weide

Mr. Weide is the founding partner of Weide & Miller, Ltd., an intellectual property law firm located in Las Vegas, Nevada. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nebraska, and a Juris Doctorate Summa Cum Laude from Creighton University School of Law. He is admitted to practice in the States of Nevada and California, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as various federal courts. Mr. Weide has prepared and prosecuted many hundreds of foreign and domestic patent applications directed to a wide range of technologies, including mechanical devices, electronics, business methods, communication systems and gaming devices and systems. He also handles trademark, copyright, trade secret and litigation matters.

Mr. Weide is the author or co-author of several intellectual property related articles, including articles published in the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law Review and the Creighton University School of Law Law Review.

Mr. Weide is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Clark County Bar Associations. He is an avid hiker, road and mountain biker and four-wheeler, and located his firm and family in Las Vegas to spend time exploring the desert environments of Death Valley National Park and the Mojave National Preserve.
